U příležitosti 300. výročí jejího prvního vydání si ji připomeňme v širším kontextu dějin teorie pravděpodobnosti. Doktrínu šancí napsal Abraham de Moivre (1667–1754), který byl autorem nejen dnes známé Moivreovy věty, ale i spoluautorem Stirlingova vzorce a dalších výsledků v různých partiích matematiky. Protože jeho životopis byl již podrobně studován, věnujeme se v tomto článku především Moivreově knize Doktrína šancí a také diskutujeme Moivreovu-Laplaceovu centrální limitní větu i spolu s jejím pozdějším významem pro matematickou statistiku, zejména teorii testování hypotéz. The first textbook of probability theory in the history was the Doctrine of Chances published in 1718. On the occasion of the anniversary of 300 years after its first edition, it is recalled here in a broader context of history of probability theory. Doctrine of Chances was written by Abraham de Moivre (1667–1754), who was the author not only of the well known Moivre formula, but also of other results in various fields of mathematics including the Stirling formula. Because Moivre’s curriculum vitae has been already thoroughly investigated, this paper is devoted mainly to his Doctrine of Chances and we also discuss the Moivre-Laplace central limit theorem together with its later importance for mathematical statistics, primarily for the theory of hypothesis testing.
