Description:
The seminar deals with automatic location of landmarks (mouth and eyes) in 2D-images of faces using templates. The experience with existing software used for location is unsatisfactory. The software is highly sensitive to small rotations of the face. The weighted correlation coefficient (a similarity measured between the template and the image) turns out to outperform than classical sample correlation.

Choice the weights will be presented to increase the discri-mination of the face parts that correspond to the template from those which do not. Optimization without constraints tends to degenerate and to obtain a robust version. The influence of single pixels is bound. In a similar way the template can be optimized to improve the discrimination further.

The results will be compared for different initial choices of correlation weights. Their robustness to different face size or rotation will be examined. The method does not use any special properties of the mouth or eyes and can be classified as a robust nonparametric discrimination technique.
